Frogun is such a beautiful, fun game, I love it! The game oozes so much charm between the graphics, designs, music, and gameplay, and each level has lots of replayability for all the extras and objectives to discover! I find it to be a very relaxing game that you can set to just chill and play some levels, but for the more hardcore players, trying to 100% the levels, especially the later ones, will still prove to be a challenge!

First, I should note that the first half of the game is Easy and the second half is Hard. It doesn’t feel like there’s a middle ground. You just hit the wall where the game opens up, the training wheels come off, and you wake up.

That difficulty eventually starts to disappear as you play more and get a Gamer Instinct for how much you can grapple etc, and then start making more jumps based on that instinct rather than sticking completely to what the UI tells you at any given time.

Secondly, in order to 100% the game, I seem to need to buy everything in the store. This will definitely require farm coins. I don’t feel the urge to farm coins.

The great joy of replaying levels is running it fast, where you don’t take a lot of coins, so now I want to strategize how best to collect coins fast so I don’t artificially drag the game out. It’s a real damper on the “Do I want to find out everything that’s going on” endgame moment. (I will do this but write this review first because just a few hours of collecting coins over and over will sour my mood for this)

Finally

Finally, speedrun mode is not my cup of tea. I have been spoiled by the excellent speedrun mode in Neon White recently. A mode that chains levels together with no downtime, and an In-Gamer Timer that sticks solely to gameplay.

You exit a level and go to the next with no movement in any level selected. This game works differently. You can visit unlocked chests for more health, so there’s an argument to be made about keeping lands selected (especially for 100% of the routes) but the timer works even during parts loading!

You can achieve the exact same result just by using a 3rd party timer separately. I honestly think it’s a shame the game doesn’t have anything more to think about there because the Individual Level speedrunning in this is great.
